Italian Village

Chicago's oldest Italian restaurant

  • Oldest Italian Restaurant
  • Family -owned
  • Loop Lunch

A beloved Chicago Landmark, the Village is a casual restaurant located on the second floor. Designed like a small Italian town, customers dine in cozy nooks with such names as La Taverna (The Tavern) and La Banca (the Bank). The Northern Italian menu features an endless selection of pasta, veal, beef, seafood, chicken, pizza, panini and salads.

Editorial Review for Italian Village – by J.P. Anderson

The Scene
This spot has been serving up big plates of pasta since 1927. Busy with a corporate-casual crowd at lunch, the place bustles with tourists and theatergoers at night. It's a warm, low-lit room where strings of lights twinkle beneath a mural of the Italian countryside, and tables in nooks and crannies make intimate dining a snap. Service is whip-smart and on the ball--these guys have been at it for ages.

The Food
The kitchen specializes in traditional Italian pasta dishes, with a few steak, chicken and fish plates thrown in for good measure. Caprese salad is a fine rendition--three enormous tomato halves topped with fresh mozzarella and basil. Chunky tomato sauce adds texture to three-cheese tortelli, while heady mushrooms and a dark, earthy sauce give delicious sage- and prosciutto-stuffed chicken depth. Other favorites include linguine with shrimp and broccoli, lasagna and chicken Vesuvio with roasted potatoes.

This restaurant never lets me down. I have been here many times for lunch and dinner, during busy and slow times. The service is great, the food is outstanding and they always remember me. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are generous. This is a great place for lunch or before a show. They know how to get you in and out without making you feel rushed. I also love the atmosphere. There are murals on the walls and its a night scene in the bar. Its very cool. This restaurant sure knows how to do it right.

I hadn't been here in quite a few months, so when I had to go downtown to have my computer repaired, I thought i'd pay a visit. It was just after lunch on a Monday, but it was just as i remembered. We were seated immediately and our waiter was too our table within minutes. Our food served quickly and as always in huge portions. I am still eating it. I am never disappointed by the professionalism and the quality and Quantity of food. I will be back for years to come.
